One of the most popular structures in the world is The Acropolis. In Greek, Acropolis means “The High City” or “The Sacred Rock,” and while there may be a lot of Acropolises inGreece, the most well-known by far is the Acropolis of Athens.

In Ancient Greece, the gods and goddesses were given high reverence, and The Acropolis of Athens was primarily dedicated to the goddess Athena, who was known to be the goddess of the city and the protectress of the civilized life. The Acropolis can be found in the middle ofAthens and numerous myths and festivals are connected to this place.

There is a very deep history by which the Acropolis stands. There are many areas in the Acropolis that have also become very popular in today’s times. Upon entering Acropolis, one will be able to reach a gateway called Propylaea. This was completed before the Peloponnesian wars broke out in 432. Mnesicles was the main architect of Propylaea and a colleague of the famous Phideas. To the left is Pinacotheca, along with a Hellenistic pedestal. In the area, you will also find a small temple dedicated to Athena, commemorating the victory of the Athenians over the Persians. This used to be the home to a statue of Athena, situated on a platform overlooking the Islands of theSaronic Gulf, which was however dismantled by the Turks during 1686.

Aside from these areas, probably the most popular place in the Acropolis is the Parthenon. This is among the majestic structures in the Acropolis. This building was designed by the great architects Iktinos and Kallikrates. It is here where one can find the huge statue of Athena. Nine years was consumed in order for the building to be erected. The stones and columns and all placed on top of each other. Every piece of the Parthenon is considered as unique and one could think of the entire structure as a huge jigsaw puzzle. In fact, it is regarded as the most perfect building in the world with the most numerous imitations.

The other areas in the Acropolis are the Erecthion, the theater of Herod Atticus, the rock of Areopagos and many others. Due to various factors that occurred over centuries such as wars and invasions, structures at the Acropolis were destroyed. It was already in the late 20th century that the area was given attention to and the rebuilding process was commenced.
